There are eight key areas that are considered when applying for this network.

  • Outdoor Spaces and Buildings: having access both indoor and outdoor where people can gather that includes green spaces, seating, zero-step entrances, staircases with railings

  • Transportation: pedestrians need safe and clear sidewalks and clear streets, dedicated bicycle lanes, and access to public transportation

  • Housing: a home that is designed or modified for aging in place or a community housing environment that is suitable for differing incomes, ages and lifestyles

  • Social Participation: increasing socialization that is accessible, affordable and fun helps to boost mental and physical health

  • Respect and Social Inclusion: feeling valued in all settings where gatherings happen helps boost self-esteem and confidence

  • Work and Civic Engagement: all work and no play doesn’t have to exist, working part-time or volunteering is a great opportunity to stay engaged in the community

  • Communication and Information: finding a variety of opportunities to communicate and information to be shared as not everyone is tech-savvy

  • Community and Health Services: having access for those who get hurt, become ill or simply need help is essential
